About Lithuania and its flag

Lithuania’s national flag is an uncharged horizontal tricolour of yellow, green, and red. The Seimas describes it as an official national emblem, and the law fixes its 3:5 proportion. Its current form is visually simple but carries a history reaching from the 1917–1918 national revival through suppression during Soviet rule and public restoration in 1988.

Flag design and meaning

The flag has three equal horizontal bands: yellow on top, green in the middle, and red at the bottom. Its width-to-length ratio is 3:5. When displayed vertically, the yellow band is on the heraldic right, with green in the middle and red on the heraldic left.

  • Yellow band: During the 1917 flag discussions, archaeologist Tadas Daugirdas proposed yellow as a symbol of dawn. This is a recorded design rationale rather than a rule stated in the flag law.

History and adoption

The Seimas history records that a Council of Lithuania commission approved the yellow–green–red design on 19 April 1918; the Council approved it as an interim state flag later that year. The 1922 and 1928 constitutions legalised the tricolour. State symbols were banned after the 1940 Soviet occupation, but the tricolour returned to public life in 1988 and was recognised as the state flag that November.

How to recognise this flag

  • Identify the equal yellow, green, and red horizontal bands, in that top-to-bottom order.
  • The flag has no coat of arms or other central emblem and uses a 3:5 proportion.
  • Do not confuse it with Lithuania’s historical armorial flag, which is a red field bearing a white mounted knight.
