About Indonesia and its flag
Indonesia’s state flag, Sang Merah Putih, is a two-colour national flag identified in the 1945 Constitution and detailed in Law No. 24 of 2009. That law places it among the symbols of national identity and sovereignty, while official government guidance describes its red-over-white arrangement and regulated public use.
Flag design and meaning
The flag is a plain horizontal bicolour: red on the upper half and white on the lower half, with no coat of arms, writing, or other charge. Indonesian law specifies a rectangle whose width is two-thirds of its length, and requires the two colour fields to be equal in size.
- Red and white fields: Government guidance describes red as representing courage and the spirit of struggle, and white as representing purity, honesty, and sincerity.
History and adoption
A red-and-white flag sewn by Fatmawati was raised at Pegangsaan Timur 56, Jakarta, when Indonesia’s independence was proclaimed on 17 August 1945. The constitutional designation of Sang Merah Putih and the later 2009 statute provide its modern legal basis; the 2009 law should not be read as the flag’s original adoption date.
How to recognise this flag
- Look for an unmarked red upper half directly above an unmarked white lower half.
- The two horizontal bands are equal in height and the flag uses a 2:3 proportion.
- Its simplicity is the key feature: there is no central emblem, star, crescent, or inscription.
