About Timor-Leste and its flag
Timor-Leste’s national flag combines a red field with overlapping yellow and black hoist-side triangles and a white five-pointed star. Section 15 of the Constitution defines both the pattern and the official meanings of its colours. Law No. 2/2007 makes the constitutional design, together with its official annexed drawing, the state standard for the flag.
Flag design and meaning
The rectangular flag has a red remainder of field. A yellow isosceles triangle extends from the hoist, overlaid by a smaller black isosceles triangle. A white five-pointed star sits at the centre of the black triangle, with one point directed toward the flag’s upper hoist-side end.
- White five-pointed star: The Constitution describes the star as the guiding light.
- Yellow, black, red and white colours: The Constitution assigns yellow to traces of colonialism, black to obscurantism to be overcome, red to the struggle for national liberation, and white to peace.
History and adoption
A 2011 government regulation places the flag in the period following the proclamation of independence on 28 November 1975, then notes that it was not flown on flagpoles during the following 24 years of foreign occupation. It was solemnly raised again at the restoration of independence on 20 May 2002, when the Constitution entered into force.
