About Australia and its flag

Australia’s national flag is a blue ensign bearing the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the Southern Cross. The flag described in the Flags Act 1953 is declared to be the Australian National Flag.

Flag design and meaning

The field is blue. The Union Jack occupies the canton. A large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star sits below it, while the fly shows the Southern Cross as four white seven-pointed stars and one smaller white five-pointed star.

  • Union Jack: It acknowledges the history of British settlement in Australia.
  • Commonwealth Star: It symbolises Australia’s federal system. Six points represent the states and the seventh, added in 1908, represents the territories.
  • Southern Cross: The five stars on the fly represent the Southern Cross constellation.

History and adoption

A Commonwealth flag competition followed federation in 1901, and the winning design was first flown on 3 September 1901. Its Southern Cross was simplified in 1903, and the Commonwealth Star received its seventh point in 1908. These developments predate the later statutory declaration: the Flags Act 1953 took effect in 1954 and declared the blue ensign to be the Australian National Flag.

How to recognise this flag

  • Look for the Union Jack in the upper hoist corner on a blue field.
  • The large seven-pointed Commonwealth Star appears below the Union Jack.
  • The Southern Cross at the fly has four seven-pointed stars and one smaller five-pointed star.
