Australia’s national flag is a blue ensign bearing the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the Southern Cross. The flag described in the Flags Act 1953 is declared to be the Australian National Flag.
Flag design and meaning
The field is blue. The Union Jack occupies the canton. A large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star sits below it, while the fly shows the Southern Cross as four white seven-pointed stars and one smaller white five-pointed star.

These developments predate the later statutory declaration: the Flags Act 1953 took effect in 1954 and declared the blue ensign to be the Australian National Flag.
