Fiji’s national flag has a bright-blue field, the Union Jack in the canton, and a shield from the national coat of arms toward the fly. Fiji’s Parliament records that it was adopted after independence in 1970 and remained in use after Fiji became a republic in 1987. A bright-blue field carries the Union Jack in the upper hoist canton. Toward the fly is a white heraldic shield with a red cross and red chief; its imagery includes a lion holding a cocoa pod, sugarcane, a coconut palm, a dove and bananas.
