About Cape Verde and its flag
Cape Verde’s national flag is a predominantly blue design crossed by a narrow white-red-white band and marked by a ring of ten yellow stars toward the hoist. Article 8 of the Constitution defines its construction and identifies the flag as a symbol of the Republic and national sovereignty.
Flag design and meaning
Five horizontal rectangular areas make up the flag: a blue upper half and blue lower quarter are separated by three equal narrow bands, white, red, and white. Ten upright yellow five-pointed stars form a circle set left of centre and below the flag’s midpoint, as precisely positioned in the Constitution.
- Blue areas: A Ministry of Education history and geography manual explains blue as representing the sea and sky surrounding the islands.
- White and red bands: The same official manual associates white with peace and red with the people’s effort and struggle.
- Ten yellow stars: The official manual identifies the stars with Cape Verde’s ten islands; the Constitution also specifies that there are ten stars.
History and adoption
The National Assembly records that a commission to propose new national symbols was created on 25 November 1991. It records a change of national symbols with the 1992 Constitution, approved in August, promulgated on 4 September, and effective from 25 September. The present flag therefore belongs to that constitutional change rather than to an unsupported single adoption date.
How to recognise this flag
- Look first for the unusually large blue upper field, with only a slim white-red-white stripe group crossing the lower middle.
- Count the ten yellow stars arranged in a ring toward the hoist; they are not centred in the flag.
