Cuba’s national flag, formally named the Flag of the Lone Star, has three blue horizontal stripes alternating with two white stripes. A red equilateral triangle at the hoist contains one white five-pointed star. Cuba’s Law No. 128 identifies it as one of the country’s national symbols and regulates its manufacture, use, honours and preservation.

The design has five horizontal stripes: three blue and two white, arranged alternately. At the hoist is a red equilateral triangle with a single white five-pointed star in its centre. The triangle and star sit over the striped field, giving the flag its immediately recognisable left-facing geometric form.

History and adoption
Official Cuban accounts date the flag’s creation to 1849 in New York, with Narciso López providing the general conception and Miguel Teurbe Tolón drawing the original sketch; Emilia Teurbe Tolón made the first flag. It first flew on Cuban soil at Cárdenas on 19 May 1850, and the Guáimaro assembly later accepted it as the national ensign. Law No. 128, published in 2019 and effective from 2020, now governs national symbols.
