About El Salvador and its flag

El Salvador uses a blue-white-blue national flag with roots in Central American federal imagery. Its law defines three equal horizontal stripes and distinguishes official forms: the ceremonial magna flag bears the full arms, while the flag for public buildings and offices carries the motto “DIOS UNIÓN LIBERTAD”. The central arms or motto make the flag easier to distinguish from other blue-and-white flags of Central America.

Flag design and meaning

Two blue horizontal bands frame a white band of the same height. In the legally specified magna form, the full coat of arms is drawn centrally. The official flag for public buildings and offices instead carries the gold motto “DIOS UNIÓN LIBERTAD” across the white band. The law gives measurements for the official flags while allowing larger versions where circumstances require them.

  • Blue and white bands: The Presidency describes the two blue bands as the Pacific and Atlantic oceans that bathe Central America, and the white band as peace.

History and adoption

The 1972 law consolidates earlier provisions. Its preamble records that the Constituent Assembly of the United Provinces of Central America adopted a flag and arms on 21 August 1823, and that a legislative decree adopted the federal-style arms and flag for El Salvador on 17 May 1912. The Presidency places the first raising under that 1912 adoption on 15 September. The later law regulates the national symbol rather than supplying a single, uncomplicated origin date.

How to recognise this flag

  • Look first for the clean blue-white-blue horizontal layout, with blue at both outer edges.
  • A central full coat of arms identifies the magna form; a gold “DIOS UNIÓN LIBERTAD” inscription across the white band identifies the public-building and office form.
