About Nicaragua and its flag
Nicaragua’s national flag is legally defined as a 3:5 rectangle with three equal horizontal bands: cobalt blue, white and cobalt blue. The national arms normally appear at the centre; the law permits an unarmed version for public patriotic celebrations and national holidays.
Flag design and meaning
The upper and lower bands are cobalt blue and the central band is white. In its standard legal form, the centre carries the national arms: a gold-edged equilateral triangle containing an isthmus, five volcanoes, two seas, a rainbow and a liberty cap, with circular wording outside.

History and adoption
The Ministry of Education says that the current flag and the present arms were created by a legislative decree dated 5 September 1908. Decree No. 1908, published in 1971, later set out their characteristics and use, including the specified 3:5 proportions.
