About Honduras and its flag
Honduras uses three equal horizontal stripes: turquoise blue, white, and turquoise blue. Five blue five-pointed stars sit in the centre of the white stripe. Government educational material dates the flag’s creation to 16 February 1866, while later legislation and regulations clarified its formal construction, colour terminology, and star arrangement.
Flag design and meaning
The flag is a rectangle in a 1:2 width-to-length proportion. Its upper and lower stripes are turquoise blue and its central stripe is white. Five blue five-pointed stars occupy the white stripe: four form a horizontally extended rectangle, with the fifth placed at that rectangle’s centre.
- Blue stripes: The Education Ministry explains the blue stripes as representing the Honduran sky and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans that border the country’s coasts.
- White stripe and five stars: The Education Ministry associates the white stripe with peace and civic virtues, and identifies the five stars with the five countries of the former Central American federation.
History and adoption
The Honduran Education Ministry dates the flag’s creation to 16 February 1866, during José María Medina’s government, under Legislative Decree No. 7. A 1971 regulation published in the official gazette says that Legislative Decree No. 29 of 1949 reformed that 1866 decree; the regulation then set out proportions, colours, and the five-star layout. These are successive legal milestones, not one undifferentiated adoption event.
How to recognise this flag
- Find the five blue stars in the white middle stripe: four outline a horizontal rectangle and one sits in its centre.
- Check for a simple blue-white-blue tricolour with no coat of arms or other emblem; the turquoise-blue outer stripes are the key colour feature.
