About Grenada and its flag

Grenada adopted its national flag on 7 February 1974, the day it became independent from the United Kingdom. Designed by Anthony C. George of Soubise in Saint Andrew Parish, it combines red, gold and green with seven gold stars and a nutmeg device that makes the design immediately recognisable.

Flag design and meaning

A broad red border frames a field divided diagonally into gold and green triangles. Six gold five-pointed stars appear in the border, three above and three below; a seventh is centred in a red disc. A nutmeg device is placed at the hoist. Government guidance gives a 5:3 land proportion and 2:1 for sea use.

  • Red: It represents the people’s fervour, courage and vitality; the red border is described as dedication to harmony and unity of spirit.
  • Gold and green: Gold represents wisdom, sunshine, warmth and friendliness, while green represents fertile land, lush vegetation and agriculture.
  • Seven gold stars: They are officially associated with the country’s parishes and with the hopes, aspirations and ideas on which the nation was founded.
  • Nutmeg device: It refers to Grenada’s Isle of Spice reputation and its traditional connection with the economy.

History and adoption

Grenada received independence from the United Kingdom on 7 February 1974 and adopted this flag on that date. Official Grenadian sources identify Anthony C. George of Soubise, in Saint Andrew Parish, as its designer. The design has served as the national flag since independence.

How to recognise this flag

  • Count the six gold stars in the red border, then find the seventh star in a red disc at the centre.
  • The small nutmeg device at the hoist, combined with the red frame and green-and-gold triangles, separates Grenada’s flag from other Caribbean tricolours.
