About Haiti and its flag
Haiti’s national flag is a blue-over-red horizontal bicolour with the arms of the republic on a white central panel. Article 3 of the 1987 Constitution defines that arrangement, while Article 2 identifies blue and red as the national colours. The constitutional text describes the design but does not assign a separate legal meaning to each colour.
Flag design and meaning
Two equal horizontal bands make the field: blue at the top and red below. At the centre is a white square carrying the republican arms: a palm tree topped by a liberty cap, shading a trophy of arms, with the inscription “L’Union fait la Force.” The arms are an integral identifying feature of the national flag.
- Blue-and-red bicolour: In a 2025 Flag Day statement, the national water authority described the bicolour as a symbol of freedom won and of unity. This is an institutional interpretation, not a colour-by-colour meaning stated in the Constitution.
- Arms and motto: The Constitution places the republican arms on the white panel and specifies the motto “L’Union fait la Force” (“Unity makes strength”), directly linking the arms to a message of unity.
History and adoption
Haiti’s Prime Minister’s office marked 18 May 2024 as the 221st anniversary of the flag’s creation, placing that commemoration in 1803 and presenting the bicolour as a national symbol of unity. The present legal description is instead found in Article 3 of the 1987 Constitution, so the commemorated creation date and the current constitutional specification should be kept distinct.
How to recognise this flag
- Look for the blue stripe above the red stripe, with a distinct white central panel rather than a plain two-colour field.
- Confirm the detailed palm-tree arms and the motto on the panel; there are no stars in the flag’s design.
