About Madagascar and its flag
Madagascar’s national emblem is a white, red and green tricolour. Article 4 of its constitution specifies three equal rectangular bands: white is vertical at the hoist, while red is the upper horizontal band and green the lower one. A 1958 Malagasy constitutional text used the same arrangement for the Republic’s emblem.
Flag design and meaning
The layout distinguishes its fields by direction as well as colour. A vertical white hoist panel is equal in size to each horizontal panel on the fly. Red occupies the upper fly panel and green the lower fly panel; the constitutional description names these three equal rectangular bands.
- Green: Larousse states that green was added at the request of coastal inhabitants and signifies hope for a better future.
- White and red: Larousse identifies white and red as colours of the Hova monarchy.
History and adoption
In 1958, the constitutional text of the Malagasy Republic named the white, red and green tricolour as the Republic’s emblem. Larousse also dates the flag’s adoption to 1958, placing the modern design in the Malagasy Republic’s founding year without relying on a more specific date.
How to recognise this flag
- Find the vertical white band at the hoist, then check that red is above green on the fly side.
- Look for three equal panels with mixed orientations: one vertical white panel and two horizontal coloured panels.
