About Mauritius and its flag

Mauritius uses a simple four-colour horizontal flag. Its current legal description requires four equal stripes, ordered red, blue, yellow and green from top to bottom, in a 3:2 proportion. The same legislation identifies it as the symbol of the Government and people of Mauritius and specifies its colour meanings, codes, sizes and materials.

Flag design and meaning

Four equal, full-width horizontal bands run from top to bottom in red, blue, yellow and green. There is no badge, star, shield or other charge. The prescribed overall proportion is three units wide to two units high, making each stripe exactly one quarter of the flag’s height.

  • Red stripe: Red represents the struggle for freedom and independence.
  • Blue stripe: Blue represents the Indian Ocean in which Mauritius is situated.
  • Yellow stripe: Yellow represents the new light of independence.
  • Green stripe: Green represents Mauritius’s agriculture and its colour throughout the year.

History and adoption

At the independence ceremony at Champ de Mars on 12 March 1968, the Union Jack was lowered and replaced by the four-colour striped flag, according to a National Assembly record. The present statutory framework is the National Symbols Act 2022, which repealed the earlier National Flag Act.

How to recognise this flag

  • Identify four uninterrupted, equal horizontal bands with no central emblem.
  • Read the colours from the top: red, then blue, yellow and green; red must be uppermost and green lowest.
