About Seychelles and its flag

Seychelles uses a five-colour flag built from diagonal rays that begin at the bottom of the hoist. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism identifies it as a national symbol under the National Symbols Act 1996 and describes it as the country’s third national flag since independence on 29 June 1976.

Flag design and meaning

Five oblique bands of blue, yellow, red, white and green radiate from the lower hoist corner. Along the top edge, the bands appear blue, yellow and red; at the fly, they appear red, white and green. The official flag code gives each of those three-band edge divisions an equal 1:1:1 proportion.

  • Oblique bands: The official flag code says the radiating diagonal bands represent a dynamic country moving into the future.
  • Colour bands: The flag code assigns blue to sky and sea, yellow to the life-giving sun, red to people working in unity and love, white to social justice and harmony, and green to land and the natural environment.

History and adoption

The Foreign Affairs flag code says Philippe Uzice designed and conceptualised the present Third Republic flag through a nationwide competition launched in 1996 to seek new national symbols. It identifies this design as the third flag used since Seychelles became independent in 1976, without presenting 1996 as a lone formal adoption date.

How to recognise this flag

  • Find the shared starting point: all five colour rays meet at the bottom of the hoist.
  • Trace the top edge from hoist to fly as blue, yellow and red.
  • Trace the fly edge downward as red, white and green; no badge or stars interrupt the five coloured fields.
