About Tonga and its flag
Tonga’s flag is a red field with a white upper-hoist panel carrying a red cross. Tonga Tourism links the design to Christianity and gives meanings for its red and white areas. The Attorney General’s official 2020 revised Constitution retains Clause 47, which says the Flag of Tonga shall never be altered and shall always be the flag of the Kingdom.
Flag design and meaning
The flag has a red ground with a white square in its upper hoist corner bearing a red cross. A contemporary 1883 description preserved by the National Library of New Zealand records this arrangement. The primary sources used here do not supply a separate modern construction sheet, so this guide does not add dimensions or colour codes.
- Red cross: Tonga Tourism says the cross reflects deep-rooted Christianity in Tonga and recalls salvation through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.
- Red field: Tonga Tourism states that red represents the blood Jesus shed.
- White panel: Tonga Tourism states that white stands for purity.
History and adoption
Tonga Tourism dates the flag’s adoption to 1875. The official revised Constitution says the Constitution was granted on 4 November 1875, and Clause 47 protects the Flag of Tonga from alteration. Together, these sources support describing 1875 as the point of constitutional entrenchment without asserting an unsupported single design event.
How to recognise this flag
- Look for red both in the main field and in the cross, with the white upper-hoist panel framing the cross.
- The cross is confined to the upper-hoist panel rather than extending across the whole flag.
