About Trinidad and Tobago and its flag

The national flag of Trinidad and Tobago is a red field crossed by a black diagonal band edged in white. It was selected from designs prepared by the Independence Committee in 1962 and first raised as the Union Jack was lowered at the start of independence. Its design is legally described in the National Emblems Act.

Flag design and meaning

A broad black diagonal runs across the red field and is bordered on both sides by narrow white stripes. The statutory description calls this a black bend dexter bordered in silver. When the flag is flown from a staff, the black-and-white diagonal points to the peak of the staff.

  • Red field: Government guidance associates red with the vitality of the land and people, the sun’s warmth and energy, and courage and friendliness.
  • White borders: Government guidance identifies white with the sea, heritage, purity of aspiration, and equality.
  • Black diagonal: Government guidance links black with the people’s dedication, strength, unity of purpose, and the wealth of the land.

History and adoption

The Independence Committee selected the design in 1962. At midnight as 30 August became 31 August 1962, the Union Jack was lowered and the Trinidad and Tobago flag was raised for the first time. The National Emblems of Trinidad and Tobago (Regulation) Act, enacted in 1967, later set out the flag’s legal description.

How to recognise this flag

  • Look for the strong contrast of one wide black diagonal with thin white outlines on an otherwise red flag.
  • There are no stars, coat of arms, or other emblems: the diagonal band is the whole design.
  • If flown from a staff, check that the black-and-white diagonal points toward the top of the pole.
