About Bhutan and its flag
Bhutan’s national flag is a diagonal yellow-and-orange bicolour crossed by a white dragon. The Constitution places the flag in its First Schedule, while the 1972 National Flag Rules describe it as a symbol of independence and sovereignty and regulate its display.
Flag design and meaning
At a 3:2 proportion, the field is divided from lower hoist to upper fly: yellow runs from the hoist toward the upper fly, while orange runs from the fly toward the lower hoist. A white Druk, or dragon, lies along the diagonal and faces the fly.
- Yellow field: It represents the secular tradition and personifies the King as upholder of Bhutan’s spiritual and secular foundations.
- Orange field: It represents the spiritual tradition and the flourishing of Buddhist teachings, including the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions.
- White dragon: It represents the undefiled thoughts, loyalty, patriotism, and shared belonging of Bhutan’s people despite different ethnic and linguistic origins.
- Dragon across the diagonal: The dragon represents the name of the kingdom, Druk, and its connection to both spiritual and secular traditions.
History and adoption
The Centre for Bhutan Studies records an early flag made for the 1949 Indo-Bhutan Treaty and a further version used in 1956 with a white dragon. The present rectangular form developed through late-1950s redesigns; its lower field changed to orange sometime in 1968 or 1969. The National Assembly approved flag rules in 1972, and the 2008 Constitution later specified the flag in its First Schedule.
