About Brunei and its flag
Brunei Darussalam’s national flag combines a yellow field, two diagonal bands and the red national crest. Government descriptions identify its geometric components and centre the crest, whose Arabic inscriptions accompany a crescent, wings, hands and a royal umbrella.
Flag design and meaning
The rectangular flag has yellow trapeziums above and below a diagonal division. That division contains a wider white upper parallelogram and a narrower black lower parallelogram. A red state crest is superimposed at the centre of the flag.
- Yellow field: The yellow field represents the Sultan of Brunei.
- Black and white diagonal bands: The bands represent Brunei’s principal wazirs, the ministers responsible for administering the country.
- Crescent in the red crest: The crescent is identified as a symbol of Islam, Brunei Darussalam’s national religion.
History and adoption
Brunei’s ceremonial office says the flag was introduced in 1906 following the 1905/1906 Supplementary Agreement. Its earlier form lacked the central state crest. The crest was added on 29 September 1959 after the constitution’s proclamation and was retained at independence in 1984.
How to recognise this flag
- Look first for the unusually bright yellow field crossed diagonally by white above black.
- The large red crest in the centre, including a crescent and Arabic script, makes it distinct from flags that use only bands of colour.
- The diagonal bands run from the upper hoist side toward the lower fly side rather than horizontally across the flag.
