About Marshall Islands and its flag

The Marshall Islands uses a deep-blue national flag crossed by broad orange and white diagonal bars, with a sharply pointed white star in the upper hoist area. The 1979 Flag Act defines its geometry and display rules, while the Embassy explains the Pacific and atoll-chain references assigned to its principal elements.

Flag design and meaning

The Flag Act specifies a blue field and two contiguous trapezoidal bars rising diagonally from lower hoist to upper fly: orange on top and white below. A 24-point white star occupies the upper hoist area; the two points parallel to the fly are longer. The Act gives hoist and fly proportions of 1 to 1.9.

Deep-blue field: The Embassy identifies the blue background with the Pacific Ocean.
White and orange diagonal bars: The Embassy says the white and orange bars represent the Ratak and Ralik chains, respectively; it also recognizes white as peace and orange as bravery.
24-point white star: According to the Embassy, the star represents the cross of Christianity and its 24 points signify municipal districts of the Republic.

History and adoption

The Official Flag of the Marshall Islands Act 1979 formally adopted an official flag and entered into force on 12 June 1979. The statute sets out the continuing official design, colour authorization and rules for display, rather than providing a separate narrative of the design’s origin.
