About Mongolia and its flag
Mongolia’s national flag is a vertical red–blue–red tricolour with a gold Soyombo on the red stripe nearest the pole. Article 12 of the Constitution includes the flag among the symbols of Mongolia’s independence and sovereignty. It also says state symbols express the Mongolian people’s historical tradition, aspirations, unity, justice and spirit; the State Symbols Law governs their construction, display and ceremonial use.
Flag design and meaning
The rectangle is divided into three equal vertical bands, red, blue and red. A gold Soyombo is centred on the hoist-side red band. The Constitution specifies a 1:2 width-to-length ratio; the State Symbols Law requires plain, unpatterned red and blue fabric and the same proportions.
- Blue centre and red side bands: Article 12 says the blue centre symbolises the eternal blue sky, while the red bands symbolise progress and prosperity.
- State flag as a whole: The Constitution and State Symbols Law describe the flag, with Mongolia’s other state symbols, as expressing historical tradition, aspirations, unity, justice and the people’s spirit.
History and adoption
The current constitutional description appears in Mongolia’s Constitution, which entered into force on 12 February 1992. It specifies the colours, Soyombo placement and 1:2 proportion. The State Symbols Law was enacted on 20 May 1994 and entered into force on 1 July 1994, providing rules for making, displaying and ceremonially using the flag. These are legal specifications and implementation dates, not a claimed separate adoption event.
How to recognise this flag
- Find the gold Soyombo only on the red band at the hoist; the blue centre band is otherwise clear.
- Check the vertical red–blue–red sequence and the elongated 1:2 proportions.
- The Soyombo is the sole charge: there is no complete coat of arms in the centre.
