Singapore’s national flag has two equal horizontal fields, red over white, with a white crescent and five white stars in the red canton. The National Symbols Act 2022 sets out the design and ratio, while official heritage material records its development during self-government in 1959 and its use as the national flag at independence in 1965.
Flag design and meaning
The flag has two equal horizontal sections, red above white, in a 2:3 width-to-length ratio. In the upper hoist-side red canton, a white crescent stands beside five white stars arranged in a circle. The crescent and stars are entirely within the red half.

In 1959, a committee led by Dr Toh Chin Chye presented the design. The Legislative Assembly endorsed the red-and-white flag on 18 November, and it was unveiled on 3 December. It later flew as Singapore’s national flag at independence on 9 August 1965, so these dates mark distinct stages rather than one adoption event.
