Mozambique’s national flag combines a red triangle at the hoist with green, black, and golden-yellow horizontal bands divided by white. Within the triangle, a star stands behind a book and crossed hoe and gun. Article 297 of the Constitution sets out the layout and the official meanings of its colours and symbols.
Flag design and meaning
From top to bottom, the field has green, black, and golden-yellow horizontal bands, separated by white strips. A red triangle fills the hoist side. At its centre is a star, with a book in front of it and a crossed hoe and gun placed over the book.

History and adoption
Mozambique’s 1975 constitution, effective from independence on 25 June 1975, described a five-colour flag with diagonal fields. Law No. 1/84, dated 27 April 1984, records that a new national flag had been created at FRELIMO’s Fourth Congress and replaces that description with the present horizontal arrangement. The 2004 Constitution retains the current layout.
