About Zimbabwe and its flag

Zimbabwe’s national flag combines a seven-stripe field with a white hoist triangle, a red five-pointed star, and the Zimbabwe Bird. Its design is set out in the Flag of Zimbabwe Act. The bird also links the flag to Great Zimbabwe, where steatite bird figures form part of the site’s internationally recognised cultural heritage.

Flag design and meaning

The field has seven equal horizontal stripes arranged green, gold/yellow, red, black, red, gold/yellow, and green. A white triangle edged in black projects from the hoist and contains a red five-pointed star with the Zimbabwe Bird. The Act’s heraldic schedule describes the green field, central red, gold, and black bands, and the black-edged white triangle.

  • Green stripes: The Embassy of Zimbabwe in Algeria states that green represents agriculture and vegetation.
  • Gold/yellow stripes: The Embassy of Zimbabwe in Algeria states that gold/yellow represents the country’s mineral wealth.
  • Red stripes: The Embassy of Zimbabwe in Algeria states that red represents blood shed during the war of liberation.
  • Black stripe: The Embassy of Zimbabwe in Algeria states that black represents the Black majority.
  • White triangle: The Embassy of Zimbabwe in Algeria states that the white triangle represents peace.
  • Zimbabwe Bird: The Embassy identifies the bird as the national emblem. UNESCO records that Zimbabwe adopted the Great Zimbabwe steatite bird as its emblem, while noting that it may have been a royal totem.
  • Red five-pointed star: The Embassy of Zimbabwe in Algeria states that the star represents the nation’s aspirations.

History and adoption

The Flag of Zimbabwe Act commenced on 18 April 1980 and provides that the flag is the design depicted and described in its schedule. Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs gives the same date as the country’s independence date. The bird on the flag also corresponds to the steatite bird emblem associated with Great Zimbabwe, a Shona cultural site dating from the 11th to 15th centuries.

How to recognise this flag

  • Look for the symmetric seven-band arrangement: green at both outer edges, then gold/yellow and red bands framing one black central band.
  • At the hoist, distinguish it by the black-edged white triangle containing both a red five-pointed star and the Zimbabwe Bird.
