About Rwanda and its flag
Rwanda’s national flag uses three colours in an intentionally uneven horizontal arrangement, with a sun device set away from the centre. Official legislation assigns named meanings to each colour and to the golden sun; this guide follows those formal descriptions rather than adding unstated colour associations.
Flag design and meaning
The upper half is blue. The lower half is divided into a yellow band above a green band, each taking one quarter of the whole flag. On the right-hand side of the blue field is a golden-yellow sun with rays; the law describes a blue ring separating the sun and its rays.
- Green: It symbolises hope for prosperity through effective use of the strength of Rwandans and Rwanda’s resources.
- Yellow: It symbolises economic development.
- Blue: It symbolises happiness and peace.
- Golden sun and rays: They symbolise progressive light and refer to unity, transparency and the fight against ignorance.
History and adoption
The 2008 law that sets out the flag’s characteristics, use and respect expressly reviews an earlier flag law, Law No. 57/2001 of 31 December 2001. It provides the formal description and meanings used today. This legislative sequence is clearer evidence than treating one date as an unqualified, single adoption moment.
How to recognise this flag
- Start with the unusually large blue upper half; the yellow and green bands together occupy the lower half.
- Look for the golden-yellow sun positioned toward the fly in the blue field, rather than centred on the flag.
