About Uganda and its flag
Uganda’s national flag combines a repeated black, yellow and red sequence with a central white disc bearing a Grey Crested Crane. Its design is set out in the National Flag and Armorial Ensigns Act, while the 1995 Constitution continues the national flag already in use. The repeated three-colour pattern and bird emblem make it especially distinctive among African national flags.
Flag design and meaning
The flag has six equal horizontal stripes, ordered from top to bottom black, yellow, red, black, yellow and red. A white disc is placed at the centre, containing a Grey Crested Crane facing the hoist. The statutory design specifies the stripe order and central crane; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs protocol handbook identifies the bird as the national symbol.
- Black stripes: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs protocol handbook says black represents African people.
- Yellow stripes: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs protocol handbook associates yellow with Africa’s sunshine.
- Red stripes: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs protocol handbook describes red as the colour of blood and an expression of African brotherhood.
- Grey Crested Crane: The crane in the central disc is identified in the protocol handbook as Uganda’s national symbol.
History and adoption
Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs protocol handbook dates the flag’s adoption to 9 October 1962, the day Uganda became independent. The National Flag and Armorial Ensigns Act records its commencement on the same date and gives the legal design. When the 1995 Constitution took effect, it provided that the national flag then in use would continue in use, preserving that established symbol.
How to recognise this flag
- Count six bands rather than three: the black-yellow-red sequence repeats once.
- Look for the large white central disc interrupting all six bands.
- The disc contains a Grey Crested Crane facing toward the hoist.
