The national flag of Solomon Islands combines a blue upper hoist-side field and a green lower field divided by a rising yellow diagonal. Five white five-pointed stars occupy the blue corner. The diagonal division and compact star group provide two quick visual cues for identifying the flag.

Flag design and meaning

A thin yellow diagonal starts at the lower hoist corner and rises to the fly, separating blue above from green below. Five white, five-pointed stars appear at the upper hoist in the blue field. No ratio, colour code, or measured star layout is included here.

History and adoption

Historical records enumerate several flags used by British Solomon Islands from 1883 to 1977. A competition announced in 1975 drew about two hundred designs; the historical account reports that the eventual design chose natural features and five island groupings rather than the preceding colonial badges. United Nations protocol lists 18 November 1977 as “Adopted / Last Changed.”
